about

“Bereft of Closure” is Kroba’s first outing on Going In. It begins on somber chords. Yearning. Full of lament. The atmosphere feels subaquatic in tone, a lone whale mooning somewhere in the unconscious. When the clarinet appears, drenched in reverb and filters, the mix begins to turn like paint swirls, as though revealing a hidden truth. At five minutes, the saxophone comes in—its notes covered in dust. Crackled textures surge and recede in the deep. Something colossal breaches the surface—An emotion too heavy for words.

Solitude is the dominant theme here—a great serpent slithering beneath the listener’s feet. At fourteen minutes, it begins to rattle and hiss. A shaker threatening danger. Tense clarinet pads waft overhead like rain clouds. Tears pour out. And then, nothing. Silence. Halfway through, the piece seems to halt altogether. This space is a gift, a respite from the pain. In the quiet, a bright beam of light begins to come forth—an arpeggio shaped like acceptance.

Zach Koeber (aka Kroba) began writing this album in October 2021 while going through a breakup with his long-term partner. The initial piece–a 25 minute synth improvisation–was born of an attempt to lull himself back to bed one sleepless night. From there, a larger work began to form. Using his clarinet, saxophone, Korg Minilogue, hand percussion elements, a looper and a pair of reverb and delay pedals, Koeber created “Bereft of Closure” in a little over two months.

The result is a healing journey, an hourlong path upon which to rediscover the treasures of the self, and the comforts of the unknown. Where the album begins in despair, it ends with hope, and a renewed trust.

This is music to be heard in its entirety. As Koeber advises, be kind and honest to yourself as you listen. Acknowledge and appreciate the emotions that arise.

Bereft of Closure,” Zach says, “is dedicated to the loved ones in my life who believed and supported me through this process of extreme life change. They inspire me to be positive and to live each day to my fullest potential.”
